We spoke with Danny South earlier this week to get a quick overview of how our season has folded so far and looking forward to our upcoming fixtures;
Q. Firstly, how is the injury? It was great to see you on the pitch again at Bridlington, albeit as a sub, do you think you’re far off full fitness? – A. The injury seems fine now, I was slightly nervous about my first run or jump on Saturday but it felt good and it was great to be back out there, although the result obviously didn’t go our way. I feel I’m ready to start and get back in to it now.
Q. We’ve had a mixed bag of results to start the season, but this is has not been helped by injuries, how would you assess our start to the season? – A. We started okay and then came along 6/7 injuries plus a couple of suspensions, including my own! This obviously didn’t help and as set us back a little. But I feel that once we get back to full fitness or at least a couple more bodies back then we will be just fine.
Q. Last season we had a similar patch in the autumn where results didn’t quite match performances and we bounced back and won promotion, how much encouragement does that give you that we can do similar this time round? – A. Obviously this season we are in a totally different league. There was some good teams in NCEL so I’m not being disrespectful when saying this but the step up in league is massive. There are no easy or given wins in this league, as we’ve seen with some of our own results and those around us. Although like I said once we get a few more bodies back then we will be fine.
Q. From a captains point of view, how easy has it been for the new players to gel into the squad, with the whole club facing the challenge of this new league? – A. It’s been easy for the new players to get right in to the changing room. We’ve got no bad eggs at all. If someone new comes along then they are always welcomed. There is a mix of experience and youth so all good which is what you need. A good changing room can get you 12/15 points a season.
Q. Our support this season has been towards the top end of the division, how much does it push the boys on each week? – A. The attendances have been fantastic this season and long may it continue. Everyone always comments on our attendances and it’s a good selling point to new players too. In terms of our recent results, I completely understand some supporters frustrations but obviously we are in a new territory and a lot of injuries. But please get behind us as you are pull us through games, starting on Saturday which is a huge game for both sides. You can be the difference.
Big thanks to Southy for his time, and we hope to see you on Saturday!
