Hallam’s pre-season campaign came to a close with an emphatic 5-1 win over Sheffield United U21.
An outstanding flurry of first half goals saw the Countrymen lead 4-0 at half time, whilst a youthful Blades’ side impressed in the second period.
The home side flew out of the blocks, and won an early penalty when Rio Allan was felled by goalkeeper Alfie Venners, the striker successfully sending the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot to give the Countrymen an early lead.
And the lively Allan nearly got his second just moments later when his clever free kick edged just wide.
Leon Howarth could have doubled the lead when he failed to convert on the stretch, before United’s Noah Kimomya’s impressive effort forced Hugo Warhurst into a flying save at the other end.
The Countrymen got their second just shy of 20 minutes in a slightly more rudimentary fashion, with captain Danny South thumping home his header after breaking free from a corner.
Rio Allan grabbed his second with a strike that goalkeeper Venners could do little about, the new signing powering his shot through the United ‘keeper for 3-0.
And Leo Howarth helped extend the lead to 4 on the stroke of half time, with his cut back from the left ricocheting off the unfortunate Venners and into the net to cap off an emphatic first half.
A raft of changes followed at the interval and the visitors came out looking much improved, and got their reward when Siem Abharra broke free and rolled it under Hugo Warhurst to get the Blades on the scoresheet.
A second half of few chances followed, although Warhurst was called into action on a couple of occasions to keep out United free kicks.
Calum Ward finished off Jack Brownell’s pinpoint pass to restore the 4 goal advantage in stoppage time in what was a useful final pre-season outing for Craig Denton’s side.
