Frickley Athletic 2 - 1 Hallam FC

Hallam FC’s schedule of pre-season friendlies continued on a blisteringly hot Saturday afternoon when they travelled to Northern Premier League side Frickley Athletic.

In a match that Frickley could expect to dominate, it was Hallam who looked the livelier in the opening quarter of the game. However a well-taken long range effort from Frickley favourite Joe West saw the Blues take the lead on the 30th minute.

The goal seemed to give the home side confidence, and they dominated the rest of the half. It was no surprise when, in the 42nd minute, Frickley doubled their lead through Bradley Wells. Half-time scoreline: Frickley Athletic 2 – 0 Hallam.

As the temperature soared, both teams continued to provide an entertaining match for the 118 supporters that braved the Saharan-like sunshine! Both sides had chances, but it was Frickley who dominated the half, holding on to the ball for long periods of time without really being able to find a way through a stalwart Hallam defence. Hallam’s dogged persistence was rewarded in the 72nd minute when they were awarded a penalty and a way back into the game. However the opportunity was squandered by a poor penalty that cleared the cross-bar and probably came to land several gardens down from the Westfield Lane Stadium!

Still Hallam refused to give up, and in the 78th minute Danny Deakin found a way to finally breach the Frickley defence and provide Hallam FC with a well-deserved goal. In the closing minutes Hallam continued to push for an equaliser, but it wasn’t to be, and this pre-season friendly ended 2 – 1 to the Blues of Frickley Athletic.

In such extreme conditions, both sides are to be congratulated for such a spirited performance, and also a well-done to the officials for allowing water breaks for the teams throughout the game.
