Hallam moved into the Second Round of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup last night (Tuesday) when a last-gasp Reece Treasure winner saw the Countrymen edge past Nostell Miners Welfare, write Ian Jones and Glenn Poulton for the Hallam FC Website.
After a goallless first half in front of another splendid crowd of 128, and despite Micah Bishop and Richard Tootle going close for the home side, it was the visitors from New Crofton who hit the front after 67 minutes when Nathan Hawkhead's strike took a vicious deflection past James Leverton to give the Welfare the lead.
With the clock running down, the Countrymen levelled through Macole Lannaman on 83 minutes following Richard Tootle's corner; and with penalties looming, an acrobatic-and deflected- Reece Treasure effort clinched a win for the home side.
Ian and Glenn caught up with Manager Stephen Whitehead after the final whistle, and started by suggesting that the result had been a real confidence-booster following a great fight back by the team.
"We went behind to a mistake after -again -having lots of possession and a hatful of chances which has been our luck this season. I’m delighted with the character the players have shown, also their togetherness and their willingness not to get beat".
The game was played at a real pace throughout. Had you decided at play at a high tempo?
"We always ask the players to -first and foremost- work hard and I think that starts with really pressing the opposition. We do that and we were comfortable for large periods of the game. We just need to start climbing that League table and get to we’re we want to be.
You lost James Reed early in the first half. Was he subbed as a precaution, as he is just getting back to his best?
"Unfortunately it was due to injury but not the same one that kept him out for a season. We wait to hear from him in the week to see how he is; and fingers crossed it’s not too serious".
Next up it's Parkgate away at Roundwood. Many fancy the Steelmen to go up, so it'll be a tough ask. How do you see the game?.
"Another really tough fixture and one where we are missing a few key players. I think we showed onTuesday night that we are capable of beating anyone in the League; we just need to start proving this with results. The return of Reece (Treasure )is a big boost for us and I think that showed when he came on Tuesday night".
